WHAT IS SELF- HYPNOSIS:
Self-hypnosis is a procedure where a patient is taught a simple
technique to bring themselves to the alpha state, the place each
of us goes every night just before we drift off to sleep. The
difference though is that you do not sleep, instead it is a heightened
state of awareness; where the “chatter” in our conscious
mind is quieted and the
subconscious mind is allowed to do what it does best, take care
of the body. This opposite capacity of the body to stress out
has been called the alpha state, meditation, the sleep state
and the Relaxation Response. It is a conscious application of
the body’s innate ability to heal itself simply by relaxing.
MYTHS ABOUT HYPNOSIS:
Many people associate hypnosis with
loss of control or doing the hula dance in a trance. It is actually
the exact opposite, a heightened state of awareness and conscious
acceptance of positive suggestions, which results in healing
physiologic responses just like acupuncture, and therapy modalities
such as ultrasound and massage. The difference is that the
patient can do this for themselves, anytime and anywhere. It
is a safe convenient easy way to limit
medication, improve sleep, decrease pain and allow one to gain
better control over their own life. |

Pain Management and
Self-Hynosis Program
|
The pain management
and self-hypnosis program, under the direction of Dr. Scott Fried,
is based on 20 years of experience in treating patients with disorders
such as:
- chronic nerve pain and reflex sympathetic dystrophy
- repetitive strain injury and carpal tunnel
- cervical disc disease or brachial plexus nerve injury
- low back pain and fibromyalgia
In fact we have achieved a 50% success rate in avoiding surgical
intervention for many orthopedic and nerve injury problems, with
a high rate of success in returning patients to life and work activities.
This program incorporates a combination of self-hypnosis and progressive
muscle relaxation techniques which allow patients to gain voluntary
control over their pain, dysfunction and disability.
The technique produces actual physiologic changes:
- decreases muscle spasm
- lessens or eliminates nerve pain
- increases blood flow to the extremities and nerves themselves
- decreases inflammation and enhances immune system function
- lowers blood pressure and decreases vascular spasm
|
The Program |
The program consists of an initial intensive session of an hour of
face-to-face initial instruction with Dr. Fried teaching the patient
the technique of self hypnosis and auto muscle relaxation. This
is not psychotherapy delving into the patient's personal life issues.
It is strictly a technique, no different than physical therapy
but with the advantage that it can be self applied any time it
is needed and the relief is reproducible at will on a regular basis.
After completing the initial session the patient will then undergo
eight to 12 follow-up sessions. These are intentionally done with
other individuals present, teaching patients that this technique
can be utilized by anyone, anywhere and in any situation.

vocational rehabilitation and career alternatives.
